Dental Implant Process

  • The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months.
  • Multiple implants can be placed at once if necessary.
  • After placement, the implant must be allowed time to heal. During this healing time you can have temporary crowns installed so that you can eat and speak normally and maintain a proper aesthetic appearance for your smile.
  • After the implant has healed your new, permanent, tooth can be installed!

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous benefits that can greatly enhance the quality of life and overall health for those who require them. They not only restore the ability to chew and enjoy a wider variety of foods – they also significantly improve cosmetic appearance and boost self-confidence.

In addition, dental implants preserve the health of the jawbone and surrounding tissues. By preventing bone loss, they help maintain the structure of the face and ensure that the surrounding teeth remain stable.

Key Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Restored Chewing Function: They function like natural teeth, allowing for comfortable and efficient chewing, which also improves digestion and overall nutrition.
  • Enhanced Cosmetic Appearance: Implants are designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth, providing a more aesthetically pleasing and natural smile.
  • Jawbone Preservation: Implants help stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss that can occur when teeth are missing, and thereby maintaining facial structure.
  • Protection of Surrounding Bone and Gums: Dental implants help to preserve the health of the surrounding bone and gum tissues, which reduces the risk of further dental issues.
  • Stability of Adjacent Teeth: By filling the gap left by missing teeth, dental implants help keep nearby teeth stable, preventing them from shifting and causing further dental problems.
  • Improved Quality of Life: With the restored ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently, dental implants can significantly enhance one’s overall quality of life.

Dental Implant FAQs

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a surgical process for replacing missing teeth. It involves inserting a small, screw-like titanium post into the jawbone, serving as an artificial tooth root. This post fuses with the bone over time, providing a stable foundation. A dental crown, designed to mimic the look and function of a natural tooth, is then attached to this post.

How much is a dental implant?

The cost of a dental implant varies widely based on the specific patient’s needs. The Van Hoof Dental team will discuss the price with you, however, keep in mind that additional costs may arise from necessary procedures like bone grafting, x-rays, or CT scans. Dental insurance may cover a portion of these expenses, but it’s important to consult with your insurance provider and dental professional for a precise estimate.

How long does a dental implant procedure take?

The dental implant procedure timeline varies depending on individual cases. Initially, the implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone, which requires healing time for osseointegration (the process of the implant fusing with the bone). This can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Once healed, an abutment is placed, followed by a few weeks of healing. Finally, the dental crown is fitted. Overall, the complete process from start to finish can take about 6 to 9 months, but complex cases might take longer.

How to relieve pain from dental implant?

Post-surgical pain from a dental implant is normal and usually manageable. Pain relief methods include: 1.) Taking prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. 2.) Applying cold compresses intermittently (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling and discomfort for the first 24-48 hours. 3.) Eating soft foods to minimize pressure on the implant site. 4.) Practicing good oral hygiene but avoiding brushing directly on the implant site initially.
